YAKUTAT 鈥� 鈥淭here they are,鈥� Ben Gaglioti said, after a short hike off a gravel road
leading away from this small fishing town. Gaglioti walked in rubber boots on a green,
squishy carpet of muskeg 鈥� a wild garden of water-loving plants growing on acidic
soil that has for centuries prevented the encroachment of giant rainforest trees.
He spotted the lime-green shade of a few lodgepole pine trees here, at their farthest-north
location in Alaska.

How one of the two large basins underlying the Arctic Ocean formed during the Mesozoic
Era remains a mystery to scientists. It鈥檚 one that geophysics professor Bernard Coakley
of the听性欲社 Geophysical Institute is hoping to unravel as he leads an international
research project that set sail this week aboard the 性欲社 research vessel Sikuliaq.
