Spring Break!

Spring break is here; you have arrived. Congratulations! Welcome to an oasis of tranquility in the long journey of the semester. What does your moment of relative calm look like? Are you hanging out in a quieter-than-usual residence hall? Are you in a cozy cabin surrounded by snow? Are you someplace far away from the snowy north? Someplace warm and green and tropical? Are you working extra hours to help make ends meet? Reconnecting with family and spending a bit more time with your kids and/or parents? Wherever you are, I hope and trust you are taking some time away from your studies to rest and rejuvenate.

This is the time to gather your resources for the final push to the summit and the end of the semester. This is your base camp. It is time to replenish your spent reserves. Spend time with family and friends. Exercise. Get outside. We are nearly back to 12 hours of daylight here in Fairbanks – and we won’t stop there. By next Monday, we’ll have more daylight than all points south. Get ready.

Know that while you are on break, ÐÔÓûÉç is still running strong. The campus is busy with activity as our employees keep working to make things better. Moore and Bartlett Halls are under construction and on target to open next fall. Construction also continues on the new Student Success Center in the Rasmuson Library. Admissions counselors are busily working with new students seeking transformative experiences, and our Advisors are here and working hard to help you get registered for summer classes! The beat goes on!

If you are looking for something to do, Student Leadership and Involvement and the Office of Sustainability are sponsoring a free spring break event. They are offering an excursion to Ice Alaska, the home of the World Ice Art Championships at the Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds. You can catch a shuttle this Wednesday, March 13 from the Wood Center roundabout. The trip will run from 1-4 p.m. ÐÔÓûÉç SLI staff will be at Ice Alaska to pay for your entrance tickets. is the event on Nanook Engage. You can also email SLI at uaf-sli@alaska.edu with any questions. If you haven’t been – check it out!

Have a great week! Enjoy the fantastic weather (it is coming!) and I wish you peace and joy each day.

Let me know where you are and what you are doing for the break that has you excited!

As always, I’m at obguthrie@alaska.edu.

— Owen Guthrie, vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management
