ÐÔÓûÉç faculty and staff,
A little over a week ago, on Friday, Feb. 21, I sent a message to campus about the on DEI. On Monday, Feb. 24, I provided further information andÌý committed to starting a regularly scheduled communication on federal actions,
board actions, and our responses. As a matter of general practice, I’ll communicate
on Mondays near the end of the day. Since the landscape is rapidly changing with existing
executive orders, new orders, and guidance, in addition agency changes, I suspect
there will be plenty to communicate. Because I just sent a communication in the form
of my Friday Focus,ÌýI will keep today’s message short.Ìý
This afternoon I appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Faculty Senate to hear
concerns. I understand that recent events have sparked a range of concerns, particularly
related to academic freedom and free speech. However, in its motion, the board affirmed
its commitment to both.Ìý
One thing that is clear is that this pace of change is likely to continue (or increase).
It is my understanding that we are likely to see multiple executive orders about the
Department of Education in the coming week. Stay tuned as I will continue to provide
updates as we learn more.
Next week I will send a message about how our current decision-making is informed
by our understanding of the financial risks to the institution. We all want to ensure
that ÐÔÓûÉç provides its mission to the people of Alaska far into the future. Our actions
today are critical. As I discussed in the senate meeting today, the risks are high
and while actions we are taking may feel drastic and sudden, they are being made in
the interest of continuing our mission of education, research, and outreach.
Thanks for choosing ÐÔÓûÉç!
