Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer Deborah Blum will speak at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Wednesday, July 20, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

Blum is currently serving as the Helen Firstbrook Franklin Professor of Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has written six books including “Ghost Hunters,” “A Field Guide for Science Writers” and “The Poisoner’s Handbook.” She won the Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting in 1992 with her series, “The Monkey Wars,” which examined ethical issues in primate research. She later developed the series into a book published under the same title.

Blum’s lecture, “Cocktails and Cyanide,” will build on her 2010 book, “The Poisoner’s Handbook.” The presentation aims to entertain and educate regarding the history of poisons, the early scientists who worked to determine the risks associated with them, and some clever homicidal mania.
