Conservation leader, Fairbanksans to celebrate Wilderness Act

Author and activist Brock Evans will help Fairbanks celebrate the 50th anniversary
of the federal Wilderness Act at one of several public events scheduled this spring.
Evans will speak from 7鈥9 p.m., April 12, in Schaible Auditorium at the University
of Alaska Fairbanks. His theme is 鈥淐elebrate the Wild 鈥 in Wilderness."
Evans, of Washington, D.C., is president of the Endangered Species Coalition. A writer
and attorney, he is the recipient of the Sierra Club鈥檚 highest honor, the John Muir
Award. He has lectured at dozens of universities and delivered hundreds of speeches
on the environment.
The free public program will include songs, poetry and a chance for people to express
their thoughts and feelings about Alaska鈥檚 wild country.
Other Wilderness Act-related events and activities scheduled for this spring include:
- Longtime Alaskans Roger Kaye, Fran Mauer, Bill Brody and Frank Keim will discuss the "The Call of the Wild" from 10:30-11:45 a.m. on Tuesdays, April 8-29, in 性欲社's University Park Building. - Alaskan Troubadour Susan Grace and the Fairbanks Peace Choir will present 鈥淔orever Wild, Celebrating Earth Day and the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act鈥 from 7鈥9 p.m., April 22, in the Pioneer Park Theater. The event will feature songs, images and poetry for all ages. The cost is $12 at the door and $6 for seniors, students and military members. For more information, call 479-0780.
- Keim will conduct a free, public wilderness poetry reading at Gulliver鈥檚 Books from 6鈥8 p.m. on April 24.
- Biologist Tom Paragi will make a free public presentation at 7 p.m., May 6, at Beaver Sports.
- Kaye and Mauer will make a free public presentation to the Arctic Audubon Society at 7 p.m., May 12, in the Noel Wien Library.
