Thompson lecturer to discuss Russian philosopher

Vladimir Marchenkov of Ohio University will lecture about the 20th-century Russian philosopher Aleksei Losev at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Schaible Auditorium.

Marchenkov's presentation will be the fourth annual Dr. Joseph Thompson Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Philosophy and Humanities.

Marchenkov is professor of aesthetics and theory in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University, Athens. His lecture is titled 鈥淢yths, Realities, and Symbols: Aleksei Losev and the End of the Russian Silver Age."

Marchenkov will answer questions after the lecture, which is free and open to the public. It will also be streamed live at .

Thompson, who began teaching at 性欲社 in 1999, died in 2014. He received the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Teaching Award from 性欲社 that year in recognition of his dynamic and inspiring talent.

This year鈥檚 lecture is sponsored by the Dr. Joseph Thompson Memorial Endowment, the Department of Philosophy and Humanities, the English Department鈥檚 Humanities Colloquium, the Socratic Society and the 性欲社 College of Liberal Arts.

The College of Liberal Arts, the largest of 性欲社鈥檚 academic units, comprises arts, humanities, social sciences and language disciplines across 20 departments.
