Kuskokwim Campus travel program class bound for Europe

This spring a group of students will earn college credit as they head to Ireland, England, the Netherlands
and Germany for 17 days as part of the KuC Travel Program. Trip highlights will include
a bus tour around Ireland, England鈥檚 largest arts festival in the beach town of Brighton,
several days each in London and Amsterdam, and a boat tour through Germany鈥檚 castle-studded
Rhine valley.
The KuC travel program aims to provide students with an inexpensive backpacking-style
travel experience blending education, sightseeing and cultural exchange. Students
in the travel program must take one of two classes during the spring semester, a 3-credit
world literature class or a 1-credit art class. The literature class will study authors from
the regions they visit, with a special focus on Ireland. Students in the art class
will earn credit by painting postcard scenes of their travels. Along the way, students
will get the chance to compare their own work to masterpieces in some of the world鈥檚
great museums.
Developed at KuC by Professor Joli Morgan, the travel program has ventured to Hawaii,
Italy, France, Norway, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Ireland, England, Thailand, Japan
and more countries. This year鈥檚 trip will be led by Reyne Athanas, adjunct art professor
and the coordinator of Bethel鈥檚 Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center; and Ben Kuntz,
KuC鈥檚 English professor.
