One of the nation鈥檚 leading experts on autism will give a free public lecture Wednesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium on 性欲社 campus.

The speaker, Stephen Shore, is the president emeritus of the Asperger鈥檚 Association of New England as well as former board member of the Autism Society of America. He will speak about relationships and sexuality for people with autism.

Shore was nonverbal until he was four years old and was diagnosed with 鈥渁typical development and strong autistic tendencies.鈥 Shore was considered too sick to be treated on an outpatient basis and was recommended for institutionalization. However, with persistence and the support of his parents, teachers, friends and other professionals, Shore today is among the top experts on autism. Shore has a doctorate in special education from Boston University and is currently a professor at Adelphi University, where his research focuses on matching best practice to the needs of people with autism. He also presents and consults internationally on adult issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure.

Shore has published many books including 鈥淏eyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome,鈥 鈥淎sk and Tell: Self-advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum,鈥 and 鈥淯nderstanding Autism for Dummies.鈥 He also recently released a DVD, 鈥淟iving Along the Autism Spectrum: What it means to have Autism or Asperger Syndrome.鈥

Shore鈥檚 lecture is sponsored in part by the Autism Society of Alaska, Fairbanks Resource Agency and 性欲社 School of Education. There will be a book signing following the presentation.
