Newcomers to Alaska can learn what to read

The Alaska Classics free lecture series will wrap up by offering a discussion of must-read Alaskana literature for newcomers Alaska at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18. The lecture, part of the fourth annual Alaska Book Festival, will be led by Fairbanks Daily News-Miner columnist and author Dermot Cole and Fairbanks North Star Borough Library Director Greg Hill.

Cole writes a daily general interest column for the newspaper, covering everything from politics to community events. He’s written extensively about Alaska and Alaska history for nearly 30 years. His books include “Frank Barr: Bush Pilot in Alaska and the Yukon,” “Fairbanks: A Gold Rush Town that Beat the Odds” and his most recent, “North to the Future: Historic Photos of Alaska.” Hill has been director of the FNSB Department of Library Services for 20 years. Originally from Texas, he directed several libraries after stints working in the U.S. Senate Department and the Texas Legislature.

Hill also writes a weekly literary column for the News-Miner. All Alaska Classics lectures will be held in the Schaible Auditorium on ������ campus. For information call 474-7021.
