性欲社 alumni Mary and Tom Albanese have loaned a collection of paintings by Sydney Laurence, Alaska鈥檚 most important landscape artist, to 性欲社. An exhibition of the works will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 23, at the Rasmuson Library.

The 12 paintings range in size from 8 inches by 10 inches to 20 inches by 15 inches and depict a variety of subjects. They include Laurence鈥檚 iconic 鈥淐ache in the Forest,鈥 as well as works he painted during a tour of Europe. Laurence was born in 1865 and died in 1940.

The paintings most recently hung in Denali State Bank on Cushman Street in Fairbanks. They will be housed in 性欲社's Rasmuson Library and will be displayed in a rotating exhibit in the library.

鈥淲e are so pleased to be able to keep these important paintings in Alaska,鈥 said Mary Albanese. 鈥淭his is where they belong.鈥

Albanese is currently teaching 鈥淟ife Writing,鈥 a MAYmester course at 性欲社. She will be one of three speakers at 鈥淭he Life of a Book,鈥 panel discussion at 6 p.m. on May 22 at Rasmuson Library.

鈥淭he paintings offer insight into Laurence鈥檚 interests and technique,鈥 said Bella Karr Gerlich, 性欲社 dean of libraries. 鈥淲e are grateful to the Albaneses for the opportunity to share them with students, researchers and the public.鈥
