UA Access to Google Photos is Ending

March 26, 2025

The University of Alaska will be ending access to Google Photos within its Google Workspace accounts on May 31, 2025. After this date, any photos or photo backups stored in Google Photos through your UA Google account will be permanently lost. This change does not apply to photos stored in Google Drive, only to those stored in the .

If you are a current user of Google Photos, it is crucial that you take action before May 31, 2025:

Work related photos, those you have stored for UA business, should be migrated to a suitable storage solution. The most appropriate storage option is situational and depends on your use-case and volume of photos. The first step is to ask your supervisor about photo storage. If the department needs a photo storage solution, please contact the NTS Service Desk and ask to schedule a consultation to discuss options for photo storage.

Personal photos, those that are not work-related should not be stored within the UA computing environment. Please move your personal photos to the storage solution of your choice such as your personal computer, Google account, iCloud or other cloud service you use for your personal information. Instructions for downloading your Google Photos or transferring them to another account can be found here.

This change is necessary as part of UA's ongoing efforts to reduce our Google Workspace storage footprint and avoid the significant costs associated with exceeding Google's new storage limits for educational institutions.

We understand this may require some effort on your part, and we appreciate your cooperation in ensuring your photos are safely backed up.
