Department of Art
2025 Outstanding Student
The 性欲社 College of Liberal Arts proudly recognizes Jaylon Pate as the 2024鈥2025 Outstanding Bachelor of Arts Student in the Department of Art. A senior with a focus in photography and a minor in business, Pate brings emotional depth, technical skill, and a profound sense of purpose to her creative work.
Her turning point came in the winter of 2024 during the creation of a photo series titled The Rally Project, a black-and-white landscape body of work completed while her husband was deployed. 鈥淚 took the opportunity to load up my dogs and my camera equipment, and we hit the road,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just road-tripped around Alaska鈥攄own to Homer, Valdez, Anchorage.鈥
What began as a photographic series became a deeply personal journey. 鈥The Rally Project was really a turning point in my life,鈥 Pate said. 鈥淚t allowed me to find out in my life what was holding me back鈥 and everything I had learned so far鈥攖he technical aspects of photography and the emotional depth I wanted to convey鈥攋ust really came together.鈥
The result was not only a powerful visual narrative but a renewed sense of identity. 鈥淗ere I am, a year later: clean, sober, social media free, and life is good,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 deepened my faith through this project and found a freedom that I had never known before.鈥
Pate鈥檚 artistic voice is shaped by both self-reflection and a willingness to grow. 鈥淎 lesson from my time at 性欲社 that I鈥檒l carry with me for the rest of my life is the importance of critique,鈥 she said. 鈥淣ot just receiving it, but seeking it and learning from it鈥 It has truly helped me grow. I鈥檝e learned to view feedback as an opportunity, not a setback.鈥
That openness to growth also led her to shift career paths. 鈥淲hen I started college right out of high school, I decided I wanted to be a nurse,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 because I loved nursing鈥攊t was just because there was a high demand for nurses.鈥 After speaking with a nurse, Pate realized the job didn鈥檛 align with her true interests. She pivoted into business, and eventually found her way to art. 鈥淓ven if your path changes, just trust your gut feeling and pursue what you are passionate about.鈥
The Department of Art at 性欲社 encourages that kind of exploration, combining creative freedom with professional and conceptual rigor. Pate鈥檚 work embodies the core values of the College of Liberal Arts: purpose, reflection, innovation, and connection.
Though she鈥檚 not yet certain where her future will lead, she鈥檚 okay with that. 鈥淎ll the plans I鈥檝e had have changed,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut knowing I鈥檓 doing what鈥檚 best for me is freeing. I know that all of this time at 性欲社 has been enriching me for what鈥檚 ahead.鈥
With a camera in her hand and faith in her heart, Jaylon Pate is ready for whatever comes next鈥攃reating, learning, and continuing to grow.
