Gender Disparity in the Criminal Process: Risk Assessments and Rights for the Accused

Join us for an insightful discussion on how gender influences the criminal justice system. Public Defender Dustin Howie will share his experiences from six years in the field, addressing key issues such as gender bias in trials and sentencing, challenges faced by women and LGBTQ+ individuals, and the intersection of gender, race, and class in legal proceedings.

Dustin Howie brings extensive experience in criminal defense, police accountability, and constitutional law. Before becoming a public defender, he worked for the Spokane City Prosecuting Attorney鈥檚 Office, later transitioning to public defense, where he has been deeply involved in complex litigation and legal challenges affecting the rights of the accused. He holds a law degree from Gonzaga University and a Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Molecular Cell Biology and Analytical Chemistry from Vancouver Island University.
