Friday Focus: Responsibility, accountability and ownership
February 07, 2025
ÐÔÓûÉç began proactive strategic enrollment planning in the fall semester of 2018. Since then, our administrators, faculty, staff, and students have worked together to implement dozens of action plans that have improved our operations, enhanced our reputation, and increased our enrollment (and revenue) despite a nationwide decline in enrollment trends. And we know there is more we need to do. New data from the Census Bureau indicate not just one, but two demographic cliffs, which will result in fewer high school graduates across the United States. In Alaska, when population figures are adjusted for the likelihood of attending college after high school, this results in a sharp enrollment decline that we are already witnessing. The University of Alaska Board of Regents has emphasized the urgency of addressing this challenge by increasing our share of new students in the competitive enrollment market and focusing on retaining and graduating the students we enroll.

Developing critical thinking through problem-based learning
February 03, 2025
In a previous teaching tip, we explored the benefits of a place-based learning approach. This time, we’ll dive into another PBL: Problem-based learning. While place-based learning helps students connect more deeply with content by relating it to their local context, a benefit that can also be a part of problem-based learning, the true strength of problem-based learning lies in its emphasis on developing and practicing critical thinking skills.

Friday Focus: From believing to achieving
January 31, 2025
Former president Theodore Roosevelt once said "Believe you can and you're halfway there." As encouraging (and true!) as those words are, being halfway there can be a difficult place to be. We are in the midst of institutional transformation at ÐÔÓûÉç. We have big goals at ÐÔÓûÉç, and I believe they are within reach. Increasing enrollment, establishing a welcoming Main Street, achieving R1, and building the Troth Yeddha' Indigenous Studies Center. It's exciting stuff! But it's going to take hard work, optimism, and creativity to get us past the halfway point - from believing to achieving.
