Friday Focus: Case closure a reminder to remain vigilant

The Sophie Sergie murder case finally concluded this week with the sentencing of Steven Downs. The case, while now closed, will always be part of our history and a reminder that ÐÔÓûÉç must remain vigilant. Occasionally when we address a disciplinary issue for misconduct at ÐÔÓûÉç, I am reminded that "we are a reflection of society" and our society is tragically affected by domestic violence, assault and discrimination. That said, we are also a powerful reflection of the good in our society and we have the ability to positively affect our future and the future of all who come here.

The ÐÔÓûÉç Center for One Health Research's International Conference, One Health, One Future 2023, is accepting abstract and poster submissions until Oct. 17. Once submitted, the materials will be reviewed by the ÐÔÓûÉç One Health, One Future Planning Team. You will be notified of the decision no later than Tuesday, Nov. 1. You are allowed to apply for both an abstract and a poster, but we request that you create two separate applications.

ÐÔÓûÉç making the switch to Canvas LMS

After a successful pilot in the 20-21 academic year followed by the adoption of Canvas in 2021-22 by the majority of our faculty, ÐÔÓûÉç is transitioning to Canvas as its new Learning Management System (LMS). Today, more than 77 percent of ÐÔÓûÉç LMS courses are being taught in Canvas. A big thank you to the faculty who have already made the transition and the staff who supported the faculty to make the switch.

In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) in December 1971, the ÐÔÓûÉç Oral History Program has just launched the Project Jukebox online interactive website that combines oral history recordings, film, photos and documents to tell the story behind the fight for passage of ANCSA, its role in Alaska's history, and its legacy.
